Maui's most iconic stretch — a sweeping 3-mile arc of powdery golden sand flanked by luxury resorts including the Hyatt, Marriott, and Sheraton. Swimming & Conditions

Generally calm and protected year-round. Gentle to moderate shore break. Best swimming north of the beach path marker. The southern end near the hotels is most protected.

Snorkeling

Black Rock (north end) is Maui's top near-shore snorkeling site — sea turtles, tropical fish, and spinner dolphins are common. Best visibility in morning calm.

Best Time to Visit

  • Morning (7–10am) for calm water and low crowds
  • Late afternoon for dramatic sunset
  • Summer (May–Sept) for calmest conditions

Parking & Access

  • Whalers Village Shopping Center parking (validated)
  • Resort self-parking (fee)
  • Beach access path runs full length — easy walk
⚠️ Safety: Shore break can be powerful at high surf. The cliff jump at Black Rock is popular but check depth carefully. Occasional strong currents at the southern end near Dig Me Beach.
💡 Local Tip: The Cliff Dive ceremony at the Sheraton at sunset (daily) is a must-see free show for visitors. Arrive 15 minutes early for a good viewing spot on the beach.

Kapalua Bay, West Maui West Maui Calm Waters

Kapalua Bay

Fleming Beach (just north) · D.T. Fleming Beach Park

Kapalua · Northwest Maui
Swimming Snorkeling Family

A small, crescent-shaped gem considered one of Hawaii's most beautiful beaches. Two rocky headlands create a naturally protected cove with some of Maui's calmest, clearest water. Excellent year-round snorkeling directly off the beach, with lava formations on both ends hosting vibrant reef communities. The white sand is soft and the setting is intimate and elegant.

Free Lot Restrooms Showers Snorkel Rental ADA Access

Snorkeling

Enter from beach center and swim toward either rocky headland. Sea turtles frequent the left (south) end. Excellent coral with parrotfish, tangs, and butterflyfish. Visibility often exceeds 50 feet.

Best Time

  • Morning for calm water and full sun
  • Year-round swimming — bay is very protected
  • Avoid when high surf advisories are posted
⚠️ Safety: Generally very safe. Caution near rocky headlands — waves can be unpredictable. D.T. Fleming (just north) has a dangerous shore break on high surf days — read posted signs.
💡 Local Tip: Arrive by 8am — parking fills quickly. The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua is a short walk away if you need resort amenities. Kapalua's Bay Course has one of Maui's most dramatic ocean-view golf holes just above the beach.
Katrina's Note: Kapalua is one of Maui's most exclusive resort communities. Condos and villas here command top dollar but deliver unmatched lifestyle. Explore Kapalua real estate with Katrina →
Napili Bay, West Maui West Maui Family Friendly

Napili Bay

Napili · Northwest Maui
Swimming Snorkeling Family Sunsets

A quintessential Hawaiian bay ringed by small condo complexes and a curve of perfect white-gold sand. Napili is beloved for calm summer waters ideal for children, exceptional sunsets, and a laid-back local vibe free of the resort crowds found further south. Turtles and spinner dolphins are frequently spotted just offshore. The bay is southwest-facing, making it one of Maui's best sunset spots.

Street/Lot Restrooms Showers No Lifeguard

Conditions

Very calm in summer (May–Sept). Moderate shore break possible in winter. Sandy entry — very family-friendly for young children during calm periods.

Parking

Limited — small lot at Napili Bay Road fills by 9am. Street parking along Hui Road F. Arrive early or walk from nearby condos.

⚠️ Safety: Winter months can bring increased swell from the north. No lifeguard on duty — swim with caution during elevated surf. Check surf reports at surfreport.org/hawaii.
💡 Local Tip: The Gazebo Restaurant at Napili Shores Resort (open to the public for breakfast and lunch) overlooks the bay — the macadamia nut pancakes are legendary. Go early — the wait is always long.
Katrina's Note: Napili condos are some of the best value in West Maui for buyers wanting direct beach access. Katrina has helped many buyers find excellent units at Napili Shores, Napili Kai, and Napili Point. Ask about Napili condo listings →

Honolua Bay

Marine Life Conservation District

Honolua · North of Kapalua
Snorkeling Expert Surf Diving

No sandy beach here — but Honolua Bay is one of Maui's crown jewels. A state Marine Life Conservation District with some of Hawaii's best snorkeling and scuba diving in summer (dead calm, crystal water, extraordinary coral). In winter (Nov–Mar), it transforms into one of the world's most famous right-hand surf breaks, hosting professional surfing contests with perfect, powerful barrels.

Roadside Only No Restrooms No Lifeguard MLCD Protected

Marine Conservation

No fishing, spearfishing, or taking marine life. Anchoring restricted. In summer, visibility exceeds 80 feet. The coral gardens are among Hawaii's healthiest. Spinner dolphins rest here.

Surf

Winter right-hander for expert surfers only. Can reach 20+ feet. Spectators watch from the cliff above — a prime vantage point. Accessed by a short trail through the jungle.

⚠️ Safety: Summer snorkeling is generally safe. Winter surf is extremely dangerous for inexperienced swimmers. Do NOT enter the water when surf is up. Rocky entry — water shoes recommended.
💡 Local Tip: Park on Hwy 30 and walk the 5-minute dirt trail through the trees. Bring your own gear — no rentals here. Check MLCD rules before diving.
Katrina's Note: Honolua Bay sits within the Kapalua resort land area. Nearby real estate is among Maui's most exclusive. Inquire about Kapalua area properties →
Baby Beach, Lahaina, West Maui West Maui Toddler Safe

Baby Beach

Puunoa Beach · Lahaina Baby Beach

Lahaina · West Maui
Swimming Family

A shallow, reef-protected lagoon just north of historic Lahaina town — perfect for toddlers and non-swimmers. The fringing reef creates a natural pool barely 2–3 feet deep at low tide, making it exceptionally safe for small children. Local families have used this as their neighborhood swimming hole for generations. Post-2023 wildfire, the Lahaina community has been rebuilding and this beach remains an important local gathering point.

Street Parking Limited Facilities No Lifeguard

Post-2023 Fire Notes

The August 2023 Lahaina wildfire deeply affected the surrounding community. Please be respectful of local sensitivities. The beach area itself was not burned, but the neighborhood is still recovering.

Best Time

  • Morning for calmest water and shade
  • Low tide for largest protected area
  • Avoid after heavy rain (runoff)
💡 Local Tip: Puunoa Point at the north end of the beach has a small boat ramp and occasionally you'll see outrigger canoes launching from here — a beautiful sight.
Katrina's Note: Lahaina's residential market is actively recovering and rebuilding. Katrina is deeply familiar with the Lahaina community and helps buyers navigate this sensitive and evolving market thoughtfully. Talk to Katrina about Lahaina area real estate →

Wailea Beach

Wailea · South Maui
Swimming Snorkeling Family Sunsets

The showpiece of South Maui — a 1,500-foot crescent of immaculate white sand fronted by the Four Seasons and Grand Wailea resorts. The water is a striking deep turquoise, typically calm and clear, with snorkeling along the rocky lava points at each end. Frequent sea turtle sightings, excellent people-watching, and some of Maui's most reliably calm swimming make this a perennial favorite for visitors and residents alike.

Public Lot Restrooms Showers Lifeguard Resort Dining ADA Access

Conditions

Excellent year-round swimming. South Maui is leeward (protected from trade winds) and typically the calmest side of the island. Occasional south swells in summer bring bigger surf.

Parking

Free public parking lot off Wailea Alanui Drive. Limited spaces — arrive before 9am or use Wailea Blue Path walking trail. Public beach access guaranteed by Hawaii law.

⚠️ Safety: Summer south swells can create dangerous shore break without warning. Jellyfish (box jellyfish) arrive 9–10 days after full moon — check alerts at ocean-safety.soest.hawaii.edu.
💡 Local Tip: Walk the Wailea Beach Path (2.5 miles) connecting all of Wailea's beaches — Polo, Wailea, Ulua, Mokapu, and Keawakapu. Dolphins are often visible from the path at dawn.
Katrina's Note: Wailea is Maui's premier luxury real estate destination. From oceanfront villas to resort condos, Katrina has deep expertise in the Wailea market across all price points. Explore Wailea listings with Katrina →
Big Beach (Oneloa), Makena, South Maui South Maui Stunning & Wild

Big Beach (Oneloa)

Makena State Beach Park · Oneloa Beach

Makena · South Maui
Swimming Bodysurfing Sunsets

Maui's most magnificent undeveloped beach — a half-mile of wide, honey-gold sand backed by the cinder cone Pu'u Ola'i with zero development in sight. Big Beach is breathtaking in scale and beauty, but commands respect: its powerful shore break has caused more injuries than any other Maui beach. On calm days it's spectacular; on high-surf days, it's extremely dangerous. Little Beach (nudist-friendly, over the cinder cone) is popular with the local free-spirit community.

State Park Lot Restrooms Showers Lifeguard (daytime)

Shore Break Warning

Big Beach's shore break is notorious. Waves break directly on the steep sand, creating a violent impact zone. Broken necks and spines have occurred here. ALWAYS evaluate before entering.

Best Times

  • Flat summer days for safe swimming
  • Sunrise: stunning and uncrowded
  • Avoid when any swell is running
⚠️ Critical Safety: Big Beach has the highest injury rate of any Maui beach. The shore break can flip and tumble swimmers unexpectedly. When in doubt, stay out. Always swim parallel to shore, not directly toward the wave.
💡 Local Tip: Sunday afternoons at Little Beach (accessible via short trail over the cinder cone) feature a legendary local drum circle — a Maui tradition. Little Beach is clothing-optional.
Katrina's Note: Makena properties are among Maui's most private and exclusive. The nearby Andaz Maui and Makena Golf Course anchor a world-class residential community. Inquire about Makena area listings →

Three interconnected county beach parks lining South Kihei Road — the heartbeat of Kihei's beach community. Each park has its own character: Kam I is the smallest and most snorkel-friendly; Kam II is the most popular for swimming; Kam III is the largest with the best grass areas, pavilions, and playground — perfect for family picnics. All three have lifeguards, restrooms, and excellent parking. Sea turtles rest on the rocks between the parks.

Snorkeling

Best snorkeling at the rocky points between each park — especially between Kam I and Kam II. Turtles frequently rest on rocks between parks. Good reef fish visibility in morning calm.

Nearby Dining

  • South Kihei Road restaurants within walking distance
  • Shave ice and food trucks nearby
  • Grocery stores for picnic supplies close by
⚠️ Safety: Rip currents can develop along rocky points between parks. Swim in designated areas near lifeguard towers. Watch children near rocky areas.
💡 Local Tip: Kam III's lawn is the best spot on Maui for an evening beach picnic — grass, trees, and a sunset view. Order from a nearby restaurant and eat on the grass. Free parking until 10pm.
Katrina's Note: Kihei is Maui's most active condo market for buyers. Numerous complexes directly across from the Kamaole parks offer beach-walking-distance lifestyles at various price points. I've helped many buyers find their perfect Kihei beach condo. Browse Kihei beach properties →
Polo Beach, Wailea, South Maui South Maui Uncrowded Gem

Polo Beach

Also nearby: Palauea Beach (White Rock Beach)

Wailea · South Maui
Swimming Snorkeling Sunsets

Polo Beach sits at the southern end of the Wailea resort strip and draws a fraction of Wailea Beach's crowds despite similarly beautiful conditions. Backed by the Fairmont Kea Lani, it has a more intimate feel with excellent snorkeling off the rocky lava points. Palauea (White Rock) just south is a local secret — a pristine, minimally developed stretch beloved by Maui residents seeking a quieter alternative.

Small Public Lot Restrooms Showers

Snorkeling

Excellent snorkeling off the lava rocks at both ends. Sea turtles and large schools of tropical fish. Morning is best. The southern rocks at Polo Beach connect to Palauea's northern point for an extended snorkel.

Access

Small public parking lot off Kaukahi Street. Fills by 8:30am on weekends. Walk the Wailea Beach Path south from Wailea Beach to reach Polo without driving.

💡 Local Tip: Palauea (White Rock) just south of Polo is one of Maui's best-kept secrets. A short walk from limited street parking brings you to an uncrowded, gorgeous stretch of sand. No facilities — bring everything you need.
Katrina's Note: The Wailea/Makena corridor south of Polo Beach features some of Maui's most exclusive residential enclaves. Katrina has sold homes throughout this area. Talk to Katrina about south Wailea →

Hookipa Beach Park

Ho'okipa · Windsurfing Capital of the World

Paia · North Shore
Expert Surf Windsurfing Kiteboarding

Hookipa is internationally revered as the birthplace of modern windsurfing and one of the world's premier wave-sailing venues. On any given afternoon, dozens of world-class windsurfers and kitesurfers perform jaw-dropping aerial maneuvers above 10–20 foot walls of water. The beach itself is dangerous for swimming most of the year, but the cliff overlook above the beach is one of Maui's great spectator spots. At dawn, sea turtles rest undisturbed on the sand.

County Lot Restrooms Showers Cliff Overlook

Windsurfing / Kite

Hookipa hosts World Windsurfing Association competitions. Morning hours belong to surfers; afternoon trade winds (12–25+ knots) bring out the windsurfers and kiters. Spectators park in the main lot and watch from the cliff.

Sea Turtles

Hookipa is one of Maui's best spots to observe Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) resting on the beach. They haul out at dawn and dusk. Keep 10 feet away — disturbance is illegal.

⚠️ Safety: Hookipa is NOT a swimming beach. Powerful shorebreak, exposed reef, and strong currents make it dangerous for all but expert water users. Enjoy from the cliff overlook.
💡 Local Tip: The cliff overlook to the left of the parking lot (west side) offers the best vantage for watching windsurfers in the afternoon. Bring binoculars. The Paia Fish Market is 5 minutes away for excellent post-viewing fish tacos.
Katrina's Note: North Shore homes in Paia, Kuau, and Haiku are among Maui's most desirable for buyers seeking a bohemian, arts-oriented lifestyle near world-class water sports. Katrina knows this market well. Explore North Shore homes with Katrina →
Baldwin Beach Park, North Shore Maui North Shore Local Favorite

Baldwin Beach Park

H.A. Baldwin Beach Park

Paia · North Shore
Swimming Bodysurfing Family

A wide, half-mile county beach park that's the quintessential local North Shore hangout. Baldwin has a slightly protected area at the east end (near the stream mouth) that's calmer for swimming, while the main beach draws bodyboarders and intermediate surfers. Huge shady monkeypod trees make this a favorite for weekend picnics and family gatherings. The free Sunday afternoon drum circle is legendary in local culture.

Free Lot Restrooms Showers Picnic Pavilions Lifeguard (weekends)

Surf & Swim

North Shore swell arrives in winter (Nov–Mar) and can be substantial. The protected "Baby Baldwin" area at the east end near the stream is calmer for children. Main beach for experienced bodyboarders only on big days.

Community Life

Sunday drum circle draws locals from across Maui. Volleyball nets, open grass, and huge shade trees make this a genuine community park. Often hosts cultural events and food trucks on weekends.

⚠️ Safety: Strong rip currents develop along the rocky groyne on the left side. Swim only in the middle of the beach. North shore winter swells can arrive without warning.
💡 Local Tip: The far east end of the parking lot has a hidden small cove known as "Baby Baldwin" — much calmer water, popular with local families with small children.
Katrina's Note: Paia and the North Shore represent some of Maui's most authentic community living. Real estate near Baldwin commands strong prices due to lifestyle appeal. Learn about North Shore home values →
Kanaha Beach Park, North Shore Maui North Shore Kiteboarding Hub

Kanaha Beach Park

Kanaha · Near Kahului Airport

Kahului · North Shore / Central
Swimming Kiteboarding Family

A long, windswept beach adjacent to the Kanaha Pond Wildlife Sanctuary — one of Hawaii's most important seabird habitats. Kanaha is the epicenter of Maui's kiteboarding scene, with consistent afternoon trade winds making conditions perfect for kiters most days of the year. A protected area at the east end near the Wildlife Sanctuary is calmer for swimming and popular with local families. Excellent birdwatching opportunity.

Free County Lot Restrooms Showers Bird Sanctuary

Kiteboarding

Kanaha is Maui's primary kiteboarding launch site. Schools operate here daily. Winds typically kick in by noon. The launch zones are designated — respect swimmer areas.

Wildlife

Kanaha Pond adjacent to the beach is an important nesting site for the endangered Hawaiian stilts (ae'o) and coots (alae ke'oke'o). Binoculars recommended for birdwatching.

⚠️ Safety: Designated kite launch areas must be respected. Strong afternoon winds can make swimming uncomfortable in the kite zone. Swim at the protected east end near the pond.
💡 Local Tip: Kanaha is the closest beach to the airport (5 minutes) — perfect for a quick beach stop before or after flying. Many travelers stop here on arrival to decompress after a long flight.

Swimming (Seasonal) Sea Caves

One of Hawaii's most visually stunning beaches — jet-black volcanic basalt sand framed by jagged lava arches, blowholes, and sea caves draped in lush tropical jungle. The dramatic contrast of black sand, emerald forest, and deep blue ocean is unlike anywhere else on Earth. The adjacent sea caves are legendary in Hawaiian mythology (legend of the princess Ka'ahumanu). Now requires advance reservation for entry.

Reservation Required State Park Lot Restrooms Showers Camping (Permit)

Reservations

Entry reservation required via gostateparks.hawaii.gov. Entry fee: $5/person + $10/car. Book well in advance — especially for weekends and holidays. Day-use hours: 7am–6pm.

Coastal Trail

A 3-mile coastal trail connects Waianapanapa to Hana town, passing lava arches, blowhole, and heiau (Hawaiian temple). Best in the early morning before heat and crowds.

⚠️ Safety: Black sand beaches heat up intensely in direct sun — bring sandals. The water is often rough with powerful shore break and unpredictable surge. Swimming is possible on flat days only. The sea caves are accessible by swimming — rough water makes this dangerous.
💡 Local Tip: Arrive at opening (7am) for the best experience before tour buses arrive. The coastal trail to Hana town is one of Maui's great short hikes — do the first mile at minimum for stunning lava arch views.
Katrina's Note: Hana properties are unique — remote, lush, and deeply Hawaiian. If you're drawn to East Maui living, Katrina has experience with the special considerations of Hana area land and water rights. Ask Katrina about Hana real estate →
Hamoa Beach, Hana, East Maui East Maui · Hana Legendary Beauty

Hamoa Beach

Hana · East Maui
Swimming Bodysurfing

James Michener called Hamoa "the most beautiful beach in the Pacific." Set in a natural amphitheater of volcanic cliffs draped in tropical vegetation, this crescent of grey-tinged volcanic sand is accessible via a steep set of stairs. The Hotel Hana-Maui (now Travassa Hana) maintains the beach but it's open to the public. The surf can be exhilarating or dangerous depending on conditions — it's one of Maui's most beautiful swimming beaches on calm days.

Roadside Lot Hotel Restrooms (guests) No Lifeguard

Surf & Swim

Hamoa receives open-ocean south and east swells. Calm days offer magical swimming; moderate swells create excellent bodysurfing. Do NOT enter when large waves are breaking.

Getting There

Drive past Hotel Hana-Maui, turn on Haneoo Road. Public parking area, then walk down the stairs. The hotel provides amenities for guests — public visitors should bring everything.

⚠️ Safety: No lifeguard. East-facing beach catches direct swell. Shore break and rip currents are significant hazards. The remoteness of Hana means emergency response times are very long — swim conservatively.
💡 Local Tip: The drive to Hamoa past Hana Bay is gorgeous. Stop at Hana Bay for a gentler swim option if Hamoa is too rough. The Hana Fresh Market on Hana Highway has exceptional local produce and plate lunches.

Red Sand Beach

Kaihalulu Beach · Hana Red Sand

Hana · East Maui
Swimming (Cove) Snorkeling

Maui's most otherworldly beach — a hidden cove of deep crimson-red volcanic sand enclosed by towering rust-colored cinder walls. The dramatic colors come from oxidized iron in the eroding Ka'uiki Head cinder cone. A natural lava barrier creates a protected lagoon with turquoise water. One of the most visually stunning places in Hawaii. The trail to reach it is short but crosses unstable terrain — shoes required. Clothing-optional area.

Short Trail Required No Dedicated Parking No Facilities

The Trail

Park near Hana Community Center. Walk through the Japanese cemetery, then follow the narrow cliff trail (5–10 min). Trail crosses crumbling lava rock — closed-toe shoes mandatory. Not recommended for elderly or mobility-impaired visitors.

Swimming

The lava rock barrier creates a semi-protected pool. On calm days, snorkeling within the barrier is excellent. Outside the barrier, open ocean swells make swimming dangerous.

⚠️ Safety: The cliff trail is prone to landslides — stay on the established path. Eroding cinder can give way underfoot. Waves surge over the lava barrier without warning on bigger surf days. Always evaluate before entering the water.
💡 Local Tip: Go early morning for best light (the red sand glows in morning sun), fewer people, and calmer water. The entire Hana Bay area nearby has much easier beach access for those wanting a simpler swim.
Hana Bay Beach Park, East Maui East Maui · Hana Protected Bay

Hana Bay Beach Park

Hana Beach Park · Kauiki Head

Hana Town · East Maui
Swimming Family

The black sand and pebble beach of Hana Bay is the social heart of Hana town, protected from open-ocean swells by the Kauiki Head lava promontory. Water is typically calm and dark — stained by volcanic minerals. A boat launch ramp and small harbor share the bay with swimmers and kayakers. The towering Ka'uiki Head with its sea cave overlooks the bay. The iconic Hana Lava Tube and Hasegawa General Store are nearby landmarks.

County Lot Restrooms Showers Food Trucks

Swimming

Generally calmer than Hamoa or Red Sand — good for families. Water is dark but clean. Visibility lower than west/south Maui. The protected northern end near the boat ramp is calmest.

Ka'uiki Head Trail

A 1-mile round trip trail to the top of the lava promontory rewards with panoramic views of Hana Bay and the Hana coast. The birthplace of Queen Ka'ahumanu is on the headland.

💡 Local Tip: Tutu's Snack Shop at Hana Bay sells fresh coconuts, local plate lunches, and shave ice — a Hana institution. The Saturday Hana Farmers Market is one of Maui's most authentic local markets.

Plan Your Visit

Maui Beach Conditions by Season

Understanding Maui's seasonal ocean patterns will help you choose the right beach — and the right time — for your ideal experience.

☀️
Summer
May – September

South Maui and West Maui beaches are at their calmest. Excellent snorkeling and swimming across the island. Occasional kona storms can bring unusual swells. Humpback whales depart by May. Trade winds moderate. Peak visitor season — beaches can be crowded.

🌺
Fall
October – November

Maui's "secret season" — fewer visitors, excellent ocean conditions, and lower prices. Ocean temperatures are warmest (80°F). Hurricane season technically extends through November but rarely affects Maui directly. North shore begins to wake up with early winter swells.

🐋
Winter
December – February

Humpback whale season (Dec–Apr) brings thousands of whales to Maui waters — visible from shore and by boat. North shore reaches its peak with massive surf at Hookipa and Honolua. South and west beaches remain mostly calm. Expect occasional rain, especially on the north shore and Hana.

🌸
Spring
March – April

Whale watching is at its peak through mid-April. Transitional ocean conditions — north swells begin to diminish and south-facing beaches calm further. Spring break brings family crowds. Perfect time to explore East Maui and Hana, which is lushest after winter rains.

Beach Questions Answered

Maui Beaches FAQ

Essential information for visitors and prospective residents exploring Maui's coastline.

Kaanapali Beach is Maui's most iconic — a sweeping 3-mile arc of gold sand flanked by luxury resorts. For the full resort experience, it absolutely delivers. But locals often point to Kapalua Bay, Napili Bay, and Wailea Beach as equally beautiful with better snorkeling and fewer crowds.

The "best" Maui beach depends entirely on what you're looking for: calm swimming, world-class snorkeling, powerful surf, dramatic scenery, or secluded seclusion. This guide covers them all.

Katrina's Tip: I match homebuyer clients with their "home beach" based on lifestyle — families often love Kamaole Parks; luxury buyers gravitate to Wailea; adventurers want North Shore access. Tell Katrina your beach style →

Yes — Hawaii law guarantees public shoreline access. No property owner, including luxury resorts, can legally block access to the shoreline below the vegetation line. All of Hawaii's beaches are public to the water's edge.

  • Resort beaches (Kaanapali, Wailea) have public access paths — look for public beach access signs
  • Some remote beaches require navigating private roads — access can be complicated
  • Waianapanapa State Park now requires advance reservations ($5/person)
  • Parking availability, not beach access, is typically the limiting factor

For beginners and weak swimmers, stick to:

  • Kapalua Bay — most protected cove on Maui, sandy entry, usually very calm
  • Napili Bay — protected, sandy bottom, calm in summer
  • Baby Beach (Lahaina) — knee-deep reef lagoon, extremely protected
  • Kamaole I, II, III (Kihei) — lifeguards, calm conditions most days
  • Wailea Beach — gentle entry, lifeguarded, calm most of the year

Avoid Big Beach (Makena), Hookipa, and any north-facing beaches during winter swells if you're not a strong swimmer.

Beachfront and beach-proximity properties command significant premiums in Maui real estate:

  • Oceanfront properties: typically 30–100%+ premium over comparable inland homes
  • Ocean-view homes: 15–40% premium depending on view quality and size
  • Walk-to-beach neighborhoods (within 5 min): 10–25% premium
  • Beachfront condos in resort areas (Kaanapali, Wailea) hold value exceptionally well
Katrina's Tip: Not all "ocean view" listings are equal — elevation, angle, and obstruction matter enormously. I evaluate every view property carefully so clients know exactly what they're buying. Get an honest ocean view assessment from Katrina →

Essential ocean safety resources for Maui:

  • Maui County Ocean Safety Division: (808) 270-7069
  • Surf report: surfline.com (Maui) or magicseaweed.com
  • Ocean safety conditions: ocean-safety.soest.hawaii.edu
  • Box jellyfish alerts: Check 9–10 days after full moon, especially South Maui
  • Lifeguard stations: Present at Kaanapali, Kamaole parks, Wailea, Baldwin, Kanaha — look for the red/yellow tower
  • Emergency: 911 — first specify you are at the beach and which beach

Universal rule: Never turn your back on the ocean. Wave sets can arrive without warning.
